Blend Projects

This company, out of British Columbia, has been around since 2019 and is all about reimagining the prefab space. They believe in building homes that are sustainable, easy, and accessible. Blend Projects specializes in creating structures that minimize impact on the environment, while maximizing energy efficiency. Their buildings are crafted using ethically sourced wood, metal sheet cladding, and finishes made from ecological materials.

They offer various models from full two-storey houses to garden suites. And while their structural components are pre-engineered and set: The interiors, windows/doors, and floor plans are completely customizable. The team takes care of the entire process, including design, permitting, site work, foundation, construction, and home warranty. Pricing starts at $400 per square foot and according to their website, takes an average of 12 months from start to finish. While that’s definitely longer than some prefab homes, the results are stunning and definitely worth it.

Right now, they only supply the West Coast. But the company has plans to expand throughout North America.

The Backcountry Hut Company

If you don’t want a house but rather a cabin, you should check out The Backcountry Hut Company (BHC). It’s creating some incredible award-winning, sustainable prefab cabins that can be built either on or off-grid. The company, also based out of British Columbia, started in 2015 with the goal to craft a simple recreational structure that could be effortlessly installed in almost any remote location.

Backcountry designs and manufactures modernist-style prefab cabins that are aesthetically stunning, and built with materials that can withstand whatever nature throws at it. There are three set models, with the smallest and cheapest being priced at $69,039 for a studio A-frame cabin. This, according to BHC, can be built “with a small team of 4-5 capable people” from start-to-finish in under a week. Their larger prefab properties require a bit more help.

Crafted by Arcana, the popular wellness cabin retreat, arhome is a meticulously designed living space tailored for exceptional guest experiences. Each unit is fully constructed in the factory and can be delivered to your location within 8 to 12 weeks. The best part? It arrives fully-assembled and ready for immediate use.

The arhome was designed by Vancouver-based architect Michael Leckie of Leckie Studio, who also designs cabins for the Backcountry Hut Company.

CABN

CABN, founded by social entrepreneur Jackson Wyatt, has been ushering in a new era of home design for environmentally-conscious consumers. They're reshaping the housing market to create sustainable and attainable homes for individuals and communities.

All their prefab homes — from the basic hut model up to their four-bedroom homes — are net-zero, cost-efficient, and truly beautiful. They can be made for both on-grid or off-grid living, and have the option for solar panels.

The smallest home, which is a one-bedroom, starts at $249,000 and can be move-in ready three to five weeks after delivery. Their largest model, the four-bedroom, can cost upwards of $689,000 if you go with the off-grid option.

BLOKK

Blokk is a pre-designed garden suite crafted by the acclaimed architect and interior designer, Noam Hazan. It comes flat-packed with IKEA-like instructions that you can either use to build yourself, or have one of their people come out and put it together for you.

The other great thing about the BLOKK units is they’re made of eco-friendly materials that are fully customizable. So whether you need room for a family member or want to create an income property, these units are an affordable way to expand your living space.

Units start as low as $89,000. But, they can be built all the way up to a two-bedroom suite complete with HVAC and Smart Home integration for $250,000.

If you’re looking for something more traditional or that you might see in the middle of Toronto, there are prefab options that you would never know are actually prefabricated. Like the ones at Maisons Bonneville.

Started by Paul-Émile Bonneville, this industry-leader has been building pre-engineered homes since 1995. They have a prefab home to suit your needs, no matter your budget or style. They have everything from a small, modern micro-loft to a large traditional, two-storey home. They even make prefab multiplexes!

Depending on which type of house you buy, and what customizations you request, the price varies greatly. Homes start at $175,000 for a smaller bungalow, but can exceed $750,000 for the more modern designs with lots of windows.
